Frequently asked questions
Is middle place a therapist or a replacement for one?
No. It’s a private space for reflection — not a therapist, not a friend, not a wellness app, and not a crisis service. It doesn’t diagnose or treat anything. If you need care, please reach out to a qualified professional.
Where is my data stored?
On your device, first and foremost. If you leave iCloud sync on, an encrypted copy also lives in your own iCloud so your chats, journal, and memory follow you across your devices. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Do you read or store my messages?
No. By default, your messages are relayed through our backend to the AI to generate a reply — the backend passes them through without storing the content or keeping logs. The only thing it records is an anonymous per-day counter to prevent abuse. You can also use your own API keys to skip our backend entirely.
Do I need an account?
No. There’s no sign-up, name, or email required. Sync works through your own iCloud account.
How do I turn off iCloud sync?
Open Settings in the app and turn off “Sync across my devices (iCloud).” This keeps your data on the current device and removes the synced copy from your iCloud.
How do I back up or move my data?
Use the export feature in Settings to save a copy of your chats and memory to a file you control. You can import that file back later, or onto another device.
What is Life Report?
An optional, warm reflection on where you are right now. Nothing happens until you tap to create it — then a snapshot of your memory (your struggles, goals, the people in your life, and what helps; medications and crisis content are excluded) is sent anonymously to compose the report. The snapshot isn’t stored, and the finished report is saved only to your device.
How does Common Ground keep my notes private?
Common Ground is end-to-end encrypted. You share a curated profile (with a first name you choose), it’s encrypted on your device, and the key travels only inside the QR code or link you hand to the other person — never to our server on its own. The backend only ever holds ciphertext; it briefly decrypts both profiles in memory to write each of you a separate report, then deletes the originals. You only ever get your own report — neither person sees the other’s raw notes, and the encrypted session auto-deletes (about 15 minutes in person, up to 24 hours for a link invite).
Will I get push notifications?
Only if you opt in, and only for one thing: when a friend you sent a Common Ground link finishes, so you can come back and reveal it. The notification carries no content. You can turn it off in the app or in iOS Settings anytime.
Are there backups if something goes wrong?
Yes — the app can keep periodic encrypted snapshots of your chats and memory in your own iCloud Drive, and restore from them. They’re encrypted with a key in your iCloud Keychain, so only your devices can read them. Set them to daily or weekly in Settings.
What does “bring your own key” mean?
Instead of using our backend, you can paste your own Anthropic key (for chat) and Google Gemini key (for document import) in Settings. They’re stored only in your device’s Keychain and sent only to those providers — never to us.
Why am I seeing a daily limit or “at capacity” message?
The built-in service has per-user daily limits and an overall capacity cap to keep costs sustainable for a prototype. Limits reset each day (at 00:00 UTC). If you hit them often, consider using your own API key.
How do I delete my data?
Delete individual chats or entries in the app, turn off iCloud sync to remove the synced copy, and delete the app to remove the local data. For any other request, email us.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone, iPad, and Mac, running iOS 26 / iPadOS 26 / macOS 26 or later.
